Abstract:
In order to identify the hydrothermal synthetic beryls with various colours from Russia occurred in the recent market, a group of beryl samples were collected and studied by using on conventional gemmological methods, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF). The results showed that the range of refractive index (1.565-1.584) of synthetic beryl samples is larger than that of natural beryl (1.575-1.581). The synthetic beryl samples have fluid inclusions with various shapes of wave-like, veil-like, spike-like, black residue and octahedral crystal inclusions. Near-infrared absorption spectra showed the peaks of 7 141 cm
-1 (type Ⅰ water) and 5 271 cm
-1 (type Ⅱ water), and the peaks of 5 456 cm
-1 and 5 101 cm
-1 which are the vibration of the type I water. The chromogenic elements of synthetic beryl samples are Fe, Cr, and V (for green ones), Fe and Ti (for blue ones), and Mn (for pink-red ones).
